When roading tripping in your Campervan around New South Wales the Mid North Coast should not be missed, from world class beaches to stunning wineries to beautiful nature this region has it all.
The Mid-North Coast spans from Port Stephens to around Woolgoolga, just north of Coffs Harbour, and has some of the prettiest sights in New South Wales. It’s easy, however, to just stay on the new highway and pass by if you don’t know where to turn off.
If it’s pristine beaches and salty little towns you are seeking, check out Tea Gardens, Seal Rocks, Crescent Head, and Scott’s Head for some peace and quiet, beautiful drives, and long stretches of empty beaches. If you’re driving through in the winter months, it’ll be hard to look out to sea without seeing the tell-tale water spouts of the passing Humpback whales on their way north.
Slightly north is the delightful town of Bellingen. If you blink on the highway you might miss the turn off, but it’s worth the time to get off the main road and go into the bush. Enjoy a morning walking up the picturesque main street and window shop. Get a great coffee and bagel at Kindred Coffee, Adrian will make you feel at home. Walk across the bridge to sit next to the river in the sunshine. Bring a picnic or some beers: there will always be locals sunbathing, kids splashing around, hippies on slacklines, playing drums and guitars. If strangers smile at you, don’t be afraid, it’s just the locals being friendly. Bellingen also has great markets, every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon there is a local Farmer’s Market with great fruit, veg, meat and fish, snacks, and live music. The third Saturday of every month is the massive Bellingen Community Markets, and this is not to be missed if you are in the area!
After your jaunt in Bellingen, take the Waterfall Way Highway up the mountain towards Dorrigo for a day trip. It’s a beautiful drive, just take it slow as it’s quite steep. Dorrigo itself is a beautiful little town, with the Dorrigo National Park right out of town. The Waterfall Walk is a great walk for all fitness levels, under the canopy of old, beautiful subtropical rainforest. There are two waterfalls on this walk, and a wonderful day out. If you’re in need of a cool down after your walk, jump over to Dangar Falls, just a few kms on the other side of town, for a swim under a stunning waterfall.
Back on the highway headed north, there’s more adventure! Sawtell, a funky beach town just south of Coffs Harbour is known for its surfing breaks, good food and chill vibes. Grab some fish and chips at Salty’s and go watch the surfers from the headland. Coffs Harbour itself is a big town where you can stock up on anything you need, and if you’re looking for some lunch the Jetty is a great area with lots of cafes- walk down the Jetty and over the bridge to Muttonbird Island for some sea breeze and a great view of the mountains towering over Coffs. Silly and irresistible, the Big Banana of Coffs is always a fun attraction on your way out of town.
If you’re into scuba diving, the Solitary Islands just off Arrawarra is a great dive! There’s some beautiful coral reef, clear water and big animals out there, and it’s a protected marine sanctuary. The last stop on the way to the Northern Rivers is the Emerald Beach Headland. If you walk south along the headland, towards the Mooney Beach Nature Reserve, you’ll find tons of kangaroos and wallabies eating, jumping and playing around on the headland and beach at sunset. This is a great place for a romantic twilight picnic, watching the light fade and the roos jump around loving life.
