Located on the Brisbane river, Brisbane is full of art, museums, luscious greenery and culture. We think it’s a great place to stop on your campervan expedition.
There are many green spaces within the city and multipurpose pathways that border the riverbanks, connecting the north and south. South bank is arguably one of the most impressive parts of the city, with beautiful public lawns, gardens and swimming pools available for all to use free of charge. Part of the South Bank is a beach and it’s the perfect partnership between city life and beach life. The perfect place to kick back and relax with your toes in the sand whilst marvelling at the stunning city skyline in the background.
If you feel like partying, then hop in your camper and drive an hour North of Brisbane city to the Gold Coast. With ample amounts of bars and clubs, it’s a great place to let your hair down and enjoy some of the local culture. The Gold Coast is also home to 5 theme parks, so it’s the perfect destination for big and little kids alike.
If you’re visiting Australia, hanging out with a koala bear is a must. The best place to do this is in the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Brisbane suburb of Fig Tree Pocket, only a short 20 min drive from the city centre. Founded in 1927, it’s the world’s oldest and largest koala sanctuary, measuring a whopping 18-hectares in total.
Moreton Island, known as “The Gem of South East Queensland”, is located north east of Brisbane and is the third biggest sand island in the world with 95% of it being a national park. Moreton is accessible via the the Micat ferry and there are no roads on the island as it’s mostly made of sand. If you plan on going further than walking distance from the ferry landing points a 4WD will be needed. There are many things to keep you entertained whilst on the island, like snorkelling, sand tobogganing or even taking a refreshing dip in the Champagne Pools at North Point. There aren’t many shops on Moreton Island so make sure you take some food and drink if you’re on a budget, to avoid paying inflated prices.
Just over an hour’s drive north of Brisbane City, travelling up the East Coast, you will find the famous Australia Zoo, named as the ‘The Ultimate Wildlife Adventure’. Here you can take a walk with a tiger, cuddle a koala and even hand-feed a red panda!
If you’re less into animals and more into exploring then the Lamington National Park is great option to get yourself out and about. It’s easily accessible in your campervan, just over 100 km south of Brisbane city and the park comes with overnight camping available in the Binna Burra section. Lamington National Park is known for its ancient Gondwana Rainforests, home to the rare Albert’s lyrebird. The Border Track offers beautiful mountain views and if you head to Python Rock lookout you can see the tumbling Moran’s Falls.
Brisbane enjoys a subtropical climate defined by warm or hot weather for most of the year. A popular destination for sun worshipers, the summer months (December to February) see average daily highs of 29 to 30°C with lows only reaching 21 to 22°C. The winter months (June to August) see average daily highs of 21°C and lows of 10 to 12°C. Brisbane only sees an average daily rainfall of 3 to 4 days during winter but up to 9 days per month in the summer months.
