Day 1: Darwin to Litchfield National Park
Start your journey from Darwin, which is the closest major city to Litchfield National Park. It’s approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Darwin to the park. Once you arrive, set up your base at one of the campgrounds or accommodation options within the park.
Day 2: Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole
Head to Florence Falls, one of the iconic waterfalls in Litchfield National Park. You can take a refreshing swim in the plunge pool beneath the falls or relax on the surrounding rocks. From Florence Falls, visit Buley Rockhole, which is a series of cascading rock pools. It’s a great spot to cool off and enjoy the natural beauty of the park.
Day 3: Tolmer Falls and Wangi Falls
Begin your day by visiting Tolmer Falls, a breathtaking waterfall that cascades into a deep plunge pool. Take the short walking trail to the viewing platform and marvel at the panoramic views. Afterward, drive to Wangi Falls, another popular destination in Litchfield National Park. Enjoy a swim in the large, crystal-clear pool or take a walk along the various trails surrounding the falls.
Day 4: Termite Mounds and Magnetic Termite Mounds
On this day, explore some of the unique attractions in Litchfield National Park. Start by visiting the Termite Mounds, where you’ll find impressive cathedral termite mounds that can reach several meters in height. Then, head to the Magnetic Termite Mounds, which are aligned north-south, believed to help regulate the temperature inside the termite colonies.
Day 5: Blyth Homestead and Sandy Creek
Drive to the southern part of Litchfield National Park and visit Blyth Homestead, a historic tin mine and pioneer settlement. Take a walk around the area and learn about the region’s history. Afterward, make your way to Sandy Creek, a picturesque spot where you can relax, swim, and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Day 6: Return to Darwin
On the last day of your road trip, return to Darwin from Litchfield National Park. Take your time to enjoy the scenic drive and make any additional stops along the way.
