YOUR ITINERARY
An hour north of Brisbane, you’ll find yourself in the Glasshouse Mountains National Park where you can marvel at the beauty brought by the weathered peaks that tower above the surrounding landscape. There’s an observation area where sunrises and sunsets are truly magical. We recommend that you start your day with a sunrise at the lookout.
Afterwards, drive for approximately three and a half hours to Bundaberg, where you can easily access the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Setup in the caravan park to prepare yourself for a day at the beach, snorkeling or hopping between tropical islands, or if you prefer a more educational experience, head on to the museums, galleries, and historical sites that litter Bundaberg.
Enjoy a three-hour drive from Bundaberg to Rockhampton, or Rocky to the locals, where a series of recreational activities and historical spots await you. Never miss Quay Street also known as the National Trust Heritage Street where you can find many old-fashioned structures not typically found anywhere else in Australia.
You can also go to the Capricorn Caves, located 30 minutes north of Rocky. There are four tours to choose from but we highly recommend the Cathedral Tour where a small limestone-built chamber has formed, which has become a popular venue for weddings. The Fossil Tour is also particularly interesting as it provides visitors a glimpse of the rich mega fauna that covered Australia millions of years ago.
Other attractions in the area include the 130-year-old Rockhampton Botanical Garden. Here you can relax in zen gardens and bond with koalas and birds in their featured zoo.
Conclude Day 2 in Monto, a three-hour drive from Capricorn Caves. Here you can choose from a wide range caravan parks designed for avid road trippers.
Spend the morning with a short bushwalk at the Cania Gorge National Park’s Dripping Rock and Overhang. Here you’ll feel refreshed with the breeze and be amazed with the coloured rock formations in the area. If you have more endurance, try the more challenging routes but make sure to be back in your camp’s base by noon time.
On your way back to Brisbane, allocate stopovers so that the six-hour drive won’t feel like a chore. You can opt to see the woodwork and gold mining history in Gympie or to marvel at the long stretch of beaches at Sunshine Coast. You can even choose to dine in this coastal paradise since it is known for award-winning culinary experiences.
