Most known for Byron Bay, the surfing, music and party hub of NSW, the Northern Rivers area actually has a lot more to offer than drunk backpackers. The natural bush areas, camping, and beaches are some of the best in Australia. Not to say Byron Bay isn’t a great place to “Cheer Up, Slow Down, and Chill Out,” check out our Byron Bay for beginners (link) here.

Just over the highway to the west of Byron Bay lays the lovely little town of Mullumbimby. Stop by The Branches Coffee Roasters in the industrial estate for a sublime cup of joe. The main street of Mullum is full of delights, shops and cafes, and they have a great markets. The Farmers Market Friday mornings from 7-11am, and the Mullum Community Market on the 3rd Saturday of every month. Just a short drive up into the hills is the Crystal Castle, it’s really worth the entry fee to spend the day in the gardens with all of the crystals, sculptures, and rolling green hills. Not far away from here is Minyon Falls, a great place to cool off and swim after a day in the gardens.

Only 10 kms south of Byron Bay is a small beach town called Lennox Head. It’s an obvious place to stop for a lunch of fish and chips and a swim on the beach, but there’s also a really special spot there called Lake Ainsworth on Bundjalung land. It’s a Tea Tree Lake, and because it’s obviously surrounded by tea trees, the water is a bright orange colour. Dive in for a swim, and it feels like you’ve spent the day at the spa. The water has a wonderful feel to it, and it is historically known as a women’s birthing site as tea tree has both healing and antiseptic properties. Lake Ainsworth also has picnic tables, bbq pits, green grass for sunning, so make a day of it!

About an hour north of Byron is Wollumbin, or Mt. Warning. Meaning “cloud catcher,” the summit gets the first rays of light in Australia. This is a sacred site of the Bundjaung people, and it is easily felt standing at the base of the mountain. The climb is about 5 hours round trip, and not to the faint-hearted. Often people start ascending in the dark so they can make it to the summit for the sunrise. It’s an incredible experience, on beautiful land, surrounded by the lush green mountains of Northern NSW.

Only 10 kms away from Mt Warning is the charming town of Murwillumbah, which is well worth a stop. Be careful, you might just stay here forever. Enjoy the scenic green caldera, the rainforest bush, the big blue river running through town. The Ventura Brewery makes amazing Hard Kombucha with views of the Mountain, an excellent place to sit and enjoy life!
