The journey covers approximately 1,500 kilometers and can take anywhere from 2 to 4 days, depending on how much time you want to spend exploring the attractions along the way. Here’s a suggested itinerary for your road trip:
Day 1: Alice Springs to Tennant Creek
- Start your journey in Alice Springs, a town known for its stunning desert scenery and rich Aboriginal culture.
- Before hitting the road, stock up on supplies, groceries, and water, as you’ll be driving through remote areas with limited amenities.
- Drive north on the Stuart Highway, and after about 500 kilometers, you’ll reach Tennant Creek.
- Along the way, you’ll pass through quaint outback towns and see the mesmerizing changing landscapes of the Red Centre.
Day 2: Tennant Creek to Devils Marbles to Daly Waters
- In the morning, take a short detour (about 100 km) to visit the famous Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu). These gigantic granite boulders are a sacred site to the local Aboriginal people.
- After exploring the Devils Marbles, continue north towards Daly Waters (approximately 290 km).
- Daly Waters is a historic pub town with a quirky atmosphere, and the Daly Waters Pub is a must-visit for a cold beer and a meal. You can also check out the pub’s collection of memorabilia and signatures left by travelers from all around the world.
Day 3: Daly Waters to Katherine to Nitmiluk National Park
- On this day, head towards Katherine (about 270 km), a town known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities.
- Once in Katherine, you can visit the Katherine Hot Springs for a relaxing soak in natural thermal pools.
- From Katherine, it’s a short drive to Nitmiluk National Park, home to the impressive Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk Gorge).
- Consider taking a boat cruise or a canoe tour to explore the breathtaking gorge and its ancient sandstone cliffs.
Day 4: Nitmiluk National Park to Darwin
- Spend the morning exploring more of Nitmiluk National Park if you have time.
- Then, make your way to Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory, which is about 320 km from Katherine.
- Once in Darwin, you can enjoy the city’s relaxed vibe, visit the Mindil Beach Sunset Market (if it’s operating), and take in the beautiful sunset over the Timor Sea.
